This year the 6th grade technology class has been busy learning many different apps and web tools. They have also spent the first 15 minutes of class all year learning to keyboard.

Our top keyboarder currently is Chase typing a rapid 45 words per minute, but most of the class is on his heels, regularly hitting the 30 words per minute mark and speeding up every day!

6th graders have learned to use various apps such as Keynote, iMovie, Pages, Comic Life, Blogger and many others. All of the 6th graders have their own class blogs (see the right side of this blog for links to student blogs). 6th graders have also read several books this year in which they were able to incorporate Minecraft and collaboratively build worlds based on their reading comprehension. These have included Jack London's To Build a Fire, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-8279503134459082852015-04-03T18:59:00.002-07:002015-04-07T12:10:09.190-07:008th Grade - Bigger or Better

In 8th grade English, students have begun reading the book One Red Paperclip, a memoir by Kyle MacDonald. The book details Kyle's journey of trades that began with one red paperclip and ended a year later with a house. The fact that Kyle ended up with a house is not really the point of the book. Although it's significant, what he also learned was that along the way he met many good and interesting people, that if he remained open to new ideas good things happened, and that he had a lot of fun along the way.

The most important thing he realized was that these things would not happen to him - he needed to make them happen by taking positive steps.
So in the spirit of open-mindedness, meeting new and friendly people, having fun, and by the way acquiring something cool, the 8th graders are undertaking a version of Bigger or Better. See the links below for each student's update on their trades and their reflections.
Last year the school began offering a technology skills class just for the middle school students - this was new, and was pretty successful. Some of those students, now in high school, as well as older high school students, expressed interest in being able to do more with technology, but last year we didn't have much in the way of tech offerings at all.

That has all changed this year - the middle school tech course is still offered, and in the high school, students can also take Logo Programming, Entrepreneurial Technology, and Digital Publishing - all tech intensive courses. Also, students looking for credit recovery can still take those through online A+ courses, but we've expanded those offerings as well in a class called Online Academy. Students taking recovery credits through A+, as well as students taking other online courses for credit during that period. Students can get one-on-one help from the teacher, as well as help contacting their online teachers. Students set up a course completion schedule at the beginning of the year, to ensure they stay on track of meeting their goals to complete their course. This has opened up lots of different course and learning options for Tok's high school students. Welcome to a new school year at Tok! There are lots of changes in the building and our courses this year that I think everyone will really like.

All of my students should know that as usual, I have wiki pages for my courses with the links listed at the right of this page. However, most of the course material and instructions will be delivered through Edmodo. Click this link to get to the Edmodo site. Most of my students from last year are familiar with Edmodo and already have accounts and passwords.

As you know we have a new principal, Mr. Roslansky. We also have a new (as a teacher) but familiar face teaching 8th-12th grade social studies, Mr. Brown, so thank goodness another year of entertaining morning announcements! A big change in the middle school is a new middle school English and Social Studies teacher, Ms. Kromer, who I know everyone will really like. Now you may be wondering what I am doing since Ms. Kromer is teaching middle school English and Social Studies...

Well most of you who know me know that I really like to use technology in my courses, so I'm excited to be the official technology teacher this year! Along with middle school technology again, I'm also teaching some new courses that I'm pretty happy about and that I hope my students will enjoy as well.

I'll be teaching an online entrepreneurship course where students will learn how to work in different capacities online that include working for someone else, or even running their own business. In today's world it's possible to do lots of interesting kinds of work but still live just about anywhere by working from your computer.

Another course I'm excited about teaching is our new Logo Programming class. Lots of you who have taken courses from me have worked in a program called Scratch where you've learned a little bit about programming using Logo. This course will be using a cool program called MicroWorlds in which students can really get into learning more about Logo and writing all kinds of programs and interactives.

Another new course will be Digital Publishing. In this course, students will be publishing the school's online newspaper (which will be written by Mr. Curtiss' Journalism class) and the school yearbook. The class will also focus on different forms of online publishing such as web page design, blogging, and other publishing platforms.

I'm happy to say we will be offering a language course again this year - Spanish. That will be taught as an online course with lots of supplementing and fun activities, and hopefully we'll be able to stir up some interest in using part of the class to plan a trip to Spain next summer!

And finally, we still offer a period in the day when students take credit recovery classes online. During that period this year we are also making space for students who may be taking other online courses through other programs such as correspondence study. I'll be helping all of those students to look at their coursework and plan their year by setting goals, helping with tech problems, and helping them keep in contact with their online instructors. In the future, most students will probably take some form of online coursework, so this is a great opportunity to learn about how to manage your time and be successful when taking an online course.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-10178193475299710602012-04-30T15:37:00.003-07:002012-04-30T15:37:39.927-07:00New Course Platform

For the rest of the school year, I will be introducing some, maybe all of my classes to Edmodo. Edmodo is an online learning platform. It's just another way for students to get assignments, instead of the usual way, which is to go to one of our class wikis. I'm not getting rid of the class wikis just yet - they may still serve a purpose.

For students in my classes using Edmodo, please click here for the link to the Edmodo site. It seems to work great on the iPads!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-44701009736029406332012-03-30T12:07:00.000-07:002012-03-30T12:07:08.320-07:00Spring is Here!Warmer weather, melting snow, sunny days - spring is finally coming to our part of Alaska! We have just finished 3rd quarter and have 2 months to go before summer is here for students! This past quarter, students have made a lot of accomplishments in technology. Check out some of the kids' blogs to see examples of special effects like lip-syncing and green screen, and cool art documentaries.

Middle school students have also been learning about propaganda in visual media. Trying to discern what part of the truth they are seeing in advertisements and videos can be tough, but the kids know that above all, they shouldn't be GULLIBLE and believe everything they see and hear. The students learned about some propaganda techniques and even made their own videos that utilize some of those techniques. Check them out on the blogs!
As you may have noticed, it's getting colder and colder outside. Please remember that your iPads don't like the cold any more than you do, and if they are cold for too long, it will hurt them - badly! Make sure you are keeping your iPad in the neoprene carrying cases when you have to carry them outside. And whatever you do, DON'T leave them in a vehicle that is not running - EVER! They get cold very fast. So remember to show your iPad some love this winter - keep it warm!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-7722408848008811042011-08-22T23:04:00.000-07:002011-08-22T23:06:27.696-07:00New Year, New iPads!

Welcome back! This year promises to be an interesting one as we take our One to One program to a new level. Instead of each middle school student having laptops, this year they all get brand new iPad's! As an added bonus, the high school students will now all have their own laptops! The extra good news is that this year, the iPads can be taken home. The high school will still keep laptops at school.

Middle school students with iPads will notice fewer textbooks this year. There will be no textbooks for 6th and 7th grade English, Social Studies, or Math, as we have all the materials you will need on the iPad or online!

During the first week of school the iPads will stay at school, but as soon as we are able to review the new One to One plan and contract with parents, they can go home!

The other new change is that the middle school students will all be taking a new technology course. During this new course, we will explore the iPads further as learning tools, learn more web tools and most importantly - digital citizenship!

Students will get more information about the iPads during the first days of our technology class - stay tuned!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-26521712298800112172011-03-11T10:39:00.000-08:002011-03-11T13:42:23.247-08:00Helpful VideosStudents - I have a new page on the right hand side of this blog under Ms. Weisz's Class Wikis called Video Tutorials that will contain lots of short tutorial videos that you can access any time you may need help. We are beginning to get back into more "fun" projects now in class - more work with video and definitely MORE BLOGGING! Start checking out student blogs to see what they have been up to.

REMINDER - all middle school students should be coming to class with a set of ear buds! I have issued every student a pair of ear buds at least once this year (some more). I know many would prefer to use their own and that is just fine - I only ask that you remember to bring them! Much of the work we do involves some form of noise emitting from your laptops.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-88244601145723727212010-09-23T17:05:00.000-07:002010-09-26T23:22:52.205-07:00SCRATCH!
Tok middle school students are learning a new language that not everyone is familiar with - it's called Logo, and it's a programming language that is used to write all sorts of computer programs. They are learning how to put the programming "bricks" together and will eventually learn to make these cool projects. I hope you all had a fantastic summer and got outside a little, had a good time with friends and family, and did something new.

I had a great summer that included all of the above. I was on the Tanana River a lot with my family, I took some trips with friends, and I did something new - I went to France with some students from Tok School!

I'm excited to see everyone again this year, and to meet our new 6th graders. Of course we are ready to roll out your 1:1 laptops first thing this year.

Because of funding, there have been some changes to our 1:1 program. Each of you will still have your own laptop, but they will not go home. For students who do not have computers at home, we are working on a program so that we can get some laptops into people's homes. If your family already has a computer at home with internet access, you will still have no problem accessing your work from school when you are at home - even though it's on a different computer! Even if it's not a Mac! However, when you are at school, you will not share your computer with other students - you will be the only user on your assigned laptop.

School Supplies:
In middle school our requirements are few - here they are;
1. paper and writing utensils - we cannot provide these, and you cannot expect your friend or seatmate to provide these for you all year!

2. ear buds - buy a few cheap pairs from the store, or just use the ones you have with your ipod - whatever. You will need them in class.

3. Optional - a jump drive (also known as a thumb drive, jump drive, gig stick, or geek stick). 1G is plenty for your needs. I hope everyone had a relaxing break and is refreshed and ready to learn for 2010! I'd like to take this opportunity to remind all of my students of several things:

1. Everyone is starting semester 2 with an A! Isn't that great? You can keep it or you can lose it - that part is entirely up to you!

2. Late work - Ms. Weisz was fairly nice about late work last semester, but ultimately it was pushed too far. Too many students waited too long to turn in assignments. This semester I'm sticking with my original policy so here it is; Assignments are due at the beginning of class. If your assignment is turned in later than that - be it one minute or one week - I will deduct 20% off your grade. Assignments may be turned in up to 7 days past the original due date for 20% off. I will NOT NOT NOT accept any assignments that are later than 7 days past the due date. Period. End of Story.

3. Incomplete work - Do not turn in assignments that have questions unanswered, and do not write "I don't know" or "IDK" as a response to questions. I will not score these assignments. I will hand them back to you and ask you to complete them, and then you will receive a late grade when it is turned in again. I usually give A LOT of time in class for you to complete assignments and get help from me if you need it. If you do take an assignment home and happen to be struggling with a particular question, you can email me, call me, contact me on Google chat, or come see me FIRST THING in the morning so that I can help you or at least know that you were having some trouble and I won't dock you on late points.

4. I am more than confident that each and every one of my students knows how to get through our class sites to find assignments, the calendar, their email, PowerSchool, and anything else they may need to take responsibility for their learning at school. I expect you all to make good use of these great tools you have to do exactly that.

Here's to a great new year and a great second semester!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-36466320022855978412009-11-06T15:38:00.001-08:002009-11-06T17:15:48.924-08:00Junior High 1st Quarter PartyJunior high school students with no F's, decent attendance, and no disciplinary actions for 1st quarter were treated to a sledding party on Friday afternoon, November 6th. There was enough snow to make sleds slide, nice weather, and a warm fire. Everyone had a good time sledding, roasting marshmallows, drinking hot chocolate, and cozying up to the campfire!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-767031636989658631.post-44076389022110887312009-10-29T10:53:00.000-07:002009-10-29T11:32:38.740-07:00Tok Junior High Student CouncilOn Wednesday, October 28, all of the junior high students of Tok School gathered in the library during assembly period to discuss some ideas for a junior high student council. Up until now, junior high classes have elected class representatives to sit on the student council, but were not allowed to run for offices as those were reserved for high school students. Junior high students have felt that they have not had much of a voice in the affairs of student council.

So after some good class discussions and discussions with the whole group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, it was decided that each class would nominate some of their existing officers to serve on a new Tok Junior High Student Council.

The new members gathered together and agreed to elect their own officers for our start up "board".
